Department - Hindi

The Hindi Department is one of the most reputed Departments of undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the University and one of the oldest Departments of the College.

The Department has a glorious past. Renowned scholars of national and international repute like Dr. Dashrath Ojha, Dr. Bharat Singh Upadhyay and Shri Krishan Shankar Shukla have been on its faculty. More recently, it had writers and critics like Dr. Mandhata Ojha, Dr. Krishna Dutt Paliwal and Dr. Suresh Rituparna and Dr. Harish Naval of national repute.

Besides teaching in Universities, colleges and schools, alumni of the Department have distinguished themselves in a variety of other professions like Administrative Services, Print and Visual Media, in the corporate sector, embassies, and in Indian Cinema and Theatre. The faculty and alumni of the Department have also consistently played a prominent role in the promotion of Hindi at the International level.

More than one hundred and fifty students study Hindi as their main subject at graduate and post-graduate levels. Hindi is also taught as a subject in the B.A. Programme course and as a concurrent/Interdisciplinary course for the other B.A. (Hons.) courses. Students of the Department have consistently secured top positions in the University examinations.

The Department has a very reputed literary society named ‘Hindi Sahitya Sabha’, under whose aegis, lectures by eminent experts are organized. Students also arrange and conduct other functions under the ‘Hindi Sahitya Sabha’. The students themselves put up a Wall Magazine ‘LAHAR’ regularly. The Department also organizes an annual festival “ABHIDHA’.

The Department has a Dramatics Society named ‘ABHIRANG’. It has organized many theatre workshops with the help of National School of Drama and Sahitya Kala Parishad. It has produced many full length plays including ‘KABIRA KHADA BAZAR MEIN’ ,‘CHARAN DAS CHOR’ and 'PREM KATHA: PANCHTANTRON SE', ‘MOTERAM KA SATYAGRAHA’, ‘BAKAREE’, ‘TERI MERI USKI BAAT’, and ‘KOLAVERIDI-AISI BHI’. The shows of these plays were conducted in different parts of India. The Department also brings out a popular acclaimed magazine titled as ‘HASTAKSHAR’, which not only adds vitality to the creative and intellectual space of the campus, but also provides a platform for the students and teachers to hone their creative skill. The magazine deals with a range of literary and topical issues and endeavors to revive the forgotten art of penmanship.
