Varun Chakravarthy Leaves Aussies Guessing as Short Braces for Spin Test Ahead

Australia’s top-order batter Matthew Short believes Varun Chakravarthy’s pace and diverse variations make him a challenging spinner to face. As teams start preparing for subcontinental spin conditions ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup, Australia is working to adapt its strategies.

Varun has already claimed four wickets in two innings during the ongoing T20I series, becoming a key weapon in India’s push for a series win Down Under. His sharp pace and unpredictable deliveries have left even seasoned batters uncertain.

“What makes it harder is just how quick he bowls,” said Matthew Short on Wednesday, on the eve of the fourth T20I at Carrara in Gold Coast.
“We’ve watched plenty of footage, but that’s probably going to be the main test heading to India or Sri Lanka if conditions favor spin,” Short added.

Short explained that pitches in Australia don’t offer the same assistance to spin bowlers as those in the subcontinent. Yet, he acknowledged Varun as a serious challenge and someone Australia must keep a close eye on.

“He’s a tough one, and one we’ll have to look out for,” he noted.

Short, who is competing for a spot in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad, appreciates the exposure to “world-class” Indian bowlers. He also recognizes that conditions in India and Sri Lanka will present a completely different dynamic, offering room for growth and adaptation.

“There are always ways to improve,” Short concluded.
