Tomato Sauce Products Recalled Due to Botulism Risk
First and Last Bakery LLC of Hartford, CT, is recalling three tomato sauce products following a potential health risk identified by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.
Details of the Recall
- The recalled sauces come in 20-ounce jars.
- They have best by dates labeled September, but the year is unspecified.
- Products were distributed mainly in Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and possibly other retailers during September.
Reason for Recall
The sauces were manufactured without an approved scheduled process or adequate evaluation of the process's safety.
Improper processing of acidified or low-acid canned foods can lead to the production of Clostridium botulinum toxin, which causes botulism poisoning.
About Botulism Poisoning
While a variety of illnesses can result from eating under-processed food, one of the most dangerous is botulism poisoning. Untreated, botulism can paralyze the muscles needed for breathing, resulting in sudden death.
Anyone who has consumed any of the recalled products and experiences symptoms of botulism poisoning should seek immediate medical attention.
Current Status
- No illnesses have been reported so far.
- All sales and production of the sauce have been suspended to comply with regulatory requirements.
