Prop 50 Approved in California, Opposed in the Mother Lode

California voters approved Proposition 50 on Tuesday, a measure concerning temporary Congressional redistricting. Statewide, nearly 64% voted in favor, while just over 36% were opposed.

Governor Gavin Newsom championed the proposal, designed to permit the redrawing of Congressional maps for the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections. The initiative was introduced in response to Texas’ redistricting moves that increased Republican representation.

Local Opposition in the Mother Lode

In contrast to the state results, Mother Lode counties voted against the measure. Tuolumne County registered just above 60% opposition, with under 40% in support. Calaveras County had similar results, with over 62% voting no and just under 38% yes.

Geographic Divide

The measure gained backing mainly from coastal regions with Democratic majorities, while inland conservative counties largely rejected it.

“The statewide results, and those locally, were opposite.”

Proposition 50 passed statewide but faced strong resistance in conservative counties like Tuolumne and Calaveras, exposing California’s sharp coastal-inland political divide.
