Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has expressed deep concern over the abduction of Dr. Tochukwu Mbanugo, a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Anambra State. Dr. Mbanugo was kidnapped by unknown armed men on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
Iziaq Adekunle Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, reported that Dr. Mbanugo was attacked near Omatha Junction, Uruagu, Nnewi, while returning home after an intensive day in surgery.
Earlier that day, Dr. Mbanugo performed several critical neurosurgical operations, including the removal of a complex brain tumor, successfully saving lives and providing advanced care to patients.
“His abduction occurred at the very point where he should have been safest: returning home from serving humanity.”
The ministry has also learned that the abductors later contacted some of Dr. Mbanugo’s colleagues through his phone.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare remains deeply troubled by this incident, emphasizing the urgent need for his safe return and highlighting the risks faced by healthcare professionals in the region.
