LIV pro blames best players for golf's feud, eyes Ryder Cup captaincy

Graeme McDowell, a Northern Irish golfer and LIV pro, has expressed a strong desire to serve as captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland. With the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black completed, focus has shifted toward the Irish event at Adare Manor.

McDowell, who served as a European Ryder Cup vice-captain in 2018 and 2021, stated he is “putting [his] hat in the ring” for the prestigious position. However, he fears that ongoing tensions between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour could obstruct his chances.

“I’d love to do it,” McDowell said, adding that political divisions in golf were fueled by the “best players in the world.”

If not for his 2022 move to LIV Golf, McDowell would likely be seen as a natural candidate for captaincy. The 2010 U.S. Open champion played on four European teams between 2008 and 2014, helping them to victory three times.

At 46, McDowell believes he is at the right stage of his career—mature but still closely connected to the contemporary golf scene—making him a fitting choice for leading Europe in 2027.
