During the Women's World Cup final at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Shafali Verma reached her first ODI half-century in three years, guiding India to 106/1 against South Africa on Sunday.
Opening the innings with Smriti Mandhana, Verma built a 104-run partnership that gave India a strong start before Chloe Tryon’s left-arm spin removed Mandhana for 45 runs off 58 balls in the 18th over.
The rain delayed the start of the match by more than an hour. After Mandhana’s dismissal, Jemimah Rodrigues joined Verma at the crease. Rodrigues had earlier scored a record-breaking 127 off 134 balls during India’s semifinal victory over Australia.
Both teams entered the final in pursuit of their first-ever Women's World Cup title. South Africa advanced to the championship following captain Laura Wolvaardt’s commanding 169 off 143 balls in their semifinal win over England.
