Kevin Durant Opens Up About the ‘Risky Decision’ He Made at Age 9

Kevin Durant decided early on that becoming a professional basketball player was his only goal, with failure not an option.

Childhood Determination

Many kids dream of playing professional sports in front of massive crowds and millions watching on TV. However, as countless NCAA commercials highlight, most college athletes end up pursuing careers outside of sports. Considering how few athletes even reach the college level, becoming a pro is an extraordinary challenge.

Durant’s Commitment to Basketball

Looking at Durant now, it’s hard to imagine him as anything but a top basketball player. Born to play, he is in his 18th NBA season and is already ranked among the all-time greats. Durant recently appeared on the podcast Not This Again with Bobbi Althoff, revealing that basketball was his sole focus even as a child.

“I had no clue” what degree I was going to get, Durant answered when asked by Althoff.

Durant spent one year at the University of Texas, enjoying college life but essentially majoring in basketball. He then left to become the second overall pick in the NBA Draft, launching his legendary career.

No Backup Plan

Unlike most people who have alternative plans if their dreams don’t work out, Durant was fully committed without any backup.

“It was basketball or nothing for me,” Durant said.
