Church of Jesus Christ Names Gérald Caussé as New Apostle

Presiding Bishop Gérald Caussé has been appointed as the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The announcement was made Thursday in Salt Lake City.

Background and Ordination

Elder Caussé, 62, had served as the church’s presiding bishop for over 11 years before being called to the apostleship. He was ordained on the same day by President Dallin H. Oaks along with members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

"I've always had a testimony of Jesus Christ," Elder Caussé said in a news release. "He's always been at the center of my life. And I know He's our Savior and Redeemer. What a wonderful thing it is to be a witness of Christ. That’s the best responsibility or stewardship we might have in our lives."

Service and Global Background

A native of Bordeaux, France, Elder Caussé was the third presiding bishop born outside the United States and the first whose native language was not English. Before his call as apostle, he served as a counselor in the Presiding Bishopric and as a General Authority Seventy.

Personal Life

He married Valérie Babin on August 5, 1986, in the Bern Switzerland Temple. Over the years, the Caussé family has lived in France, Germany, and the United States due to his various church assignments.

Elder Gérald Caussé, a longtime church leader from France, has been called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, marking a significant international step for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
