Dan Trachtenberg, director of the Predator franchise, shared his vision for continuing Kevin Costner's controversial 1995 sci-fi film Waterworld. After successfully reviving Predator, Trachtenberg revealed the next project he'd like to fix.
Speaking with Collider at the Predator: Badlands premiere, Trachtenberg expressed his preference for bringing Waterworld back not as a movie, but as a video game.
“The thing about Waterworld that I want to see is a video game. I want to see an open-world third-person action-adventure video game that is not a remake of the movie, but is a sequel to the movie. That's what I want to see.”
This concept emphasizes expanding the franchise’s story through interactive media rather than traditional film.
Trachtenberg's idea is supported by examples like Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which served as a successful sequel to the original movies. Released in 2009, the game takes place two years after the events of 1989’s Ghostbusters II.
This model shows how video games can extend and enrich cinematic universes.
Dan Trachtenberg advocates for reviving Waterworld as an open-world video game sequel, highlighting the potential of gaming to refresh and expand classic movie stories.
