AZ suffered a convincing 3-1 defeat against Premier League side Crystal Palace on Thursday evening at Selhorst Park. Despite the loss, luck prevented the home team from scoring even more.
Crystal Palace created their opening opportunity in the 11th minute. Chris Richards headed a long ball back into the box, which Ismaila Sarr controlled on his chest before his volley crashed against the post.
Moments later, Palace earned a penalty after a through ball from Yeremy Pino reached Sarr, who was fouled by Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro. However, Jean-Philippe Mateta's penalty was heroically saved by Owusu-Oduro.
Following the penalty miss, Palace intensified their attacks. Owusu-Oduro made an excellent save to deny a header from Sarr, and Will Hughes then struck a volley that hit the crossbar. The relentless pressure paid off as Palace scored the first goal shortly after.
A long ball was headed down by Sarr to center back Maxine Lacroix, whose powerful volley found the corner of the net.
AZ tested Palace’s goalkeeper Dean Henderson for the first time in injury time before halftime when Sven Mijnans fired a decent shot from distance, which Henderson pushed away.
Crystal Palace dominated AZ with sharp attacking play and resilience, securing a 3-1 win despite missing a penalty and multiple close chances for both sides.
