Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux from Alberta has announced his resignation from the House of Commons after several days of speculation about his possible defection to the governing Liberals. The announcement follows a turbulent week within the Conservative Party.
"It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one," wrote Jeneroux in his resignation letter obtained by the National Post.
In his letter, Jeneroux said he informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday of his decision to leave Parliament at an unspecified date. The Edmonton Riverbend MP, who first entered Parliament in 2015, did not explain the reasons for his sudden departure.
Although his message made only brief mention of party leader Pierre Poilievre, Jeneroux expressed respect for “the many remarkable individuals” serving "on both sides of the aisle" in the House of Commons.
His exit marks the second resignation from the Conservative caucus within three days, dealing a notable setback to Poilievre less than three months before the party’s scheduled leadership review in January.
Matt Jeneroux’s surprising resignation amid party unrest underscores internal challenges facing Conservatives ahead of their upcoming leadership review.
