Before Monday’s game against Pittsburgh, head coach Craig Berube spoke about several lineup changes and player performances, including the Cowan-Tavares-Nylander line, Chris Tanev’s condition, and David Kampf’s decision to step away from the Marlies.
When asked about David Kampf taking a step away from the Marlies, Berube explained that it came down to roster size and player choices.
“I didn’t see frustration in camp. He came in, and there was competition. We have too many players, and we have to make decisions. Going down to the minors isn’t where he wants to be, so that’s his decision. That’s something for him and Brad Treliving to work out.”
Berube shared his impressions of the line combination seen on Saturday night, praising the chemistry between Easton Cowan and John Tavares and anticipating positive results with William Nylander joining them.
“Cowan really handled the puck well through the neutral zone and made plays in the offensive end. He and JT seemed to read each other effectively, creating strong scoring chances.”
Berube emphasized competition within the team, commented on Kampf’s personal choice to step away, and expressed confidence in the chemistry forming across the Leafs’ lineup.
