Latest On David Kampf

Veteran center David Kampf has briefly stepped away from the AHL's Toronto Marlies to reconsider his future. During the offseason, the Maple Leafs attempted to find a new team for Kampf, but no trade materialized. Consequently, he was waived during training camp and, after going unclaimed, assigned to the Marlies.

Contract and Role Changes

General Manager Brad Treliving signed Kampf, aged 30, to a four-year, $9.6 million contract just over two years ago. Initially, Kampf was expected to anchor the fourth line and excel in faceoffs and penalty kills. However, last season his role diminished under coach Craig Berube, with less expensive players now filling his spot.

Current Season Status

This season, Kampf has played in only four of the Marlies' seven games and did not dress for a recent road game in Chicago. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, he is taking a few days off to consider his options.

Potential Future Moves

In recent years, some players have left guaranteed contracts hoping for better NHL opportunities or to return to the league. Examples include Conor Sheary, Brandon Saad, and Filip Zadina. Kampf might be contemplating a similar path despite forfeiting over $3 million owed from his salary and signing bonus for this and next season.

Despite a substantial contract and prior expectations, Kampf's reduced role and current uncertainty highlight the challenges veterans face in maintaining NHL positions.
