Steve Witkoff, the U.S. envoy, announced at the America Business Forum in Miami that the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas is willing to hand over its weapons to an international security force operating in the Gaza Strip.
Witkoff stated that Washington is applying pressure on Israel to permit Hamas militants, currently besieged in Rafah in southern Gaza, to evacuate the area.
"Hamas has always made it clear that it is ready to hand over its weapons," Witkoff said, referencing a conversation with Jared Kushner, advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump.
The U.S. envoy expressed optimism that Hamas will honor this commitment. He added,
"If it does, it will realize that the development plan we have for Gaza is truly extraordinary, much better than what was proposed in the past."
This plan notably includes a vast job creation program designed to improve the region's economic conditions.
