Freed British drug mule gran faces being locked up in UK despite Bali nightmare

Freed British Drug Mule Gran Faces Imprisonment in UK

Lindsay Sandiford, a British grandmother and former drug mule, will arrive in the UK tomorrow after spending over a decade on death row in Indonesia. Despite gaining freedom, she is expected to be imprisoned once back in Britain.

The 69-year-old pensioner was seen in a wheelchair as she experienced freedom for the first time in 13 years, following her release from Bali's infamous Kerobokan prison. Wearing a mask and shielding her face from photographers, she was quickly escorted to Denpasar International Airport, where she boarded a Qatar Airways flight.

The UK government funded her £600 plane ticket after Keir Starmer negotiated a bilateral agreement with Indonesian authorities securing her release. Sandiford is reported to be in very poor health as she undertakes the 20-hour journey back to the UK.

The release concludes a deeply distressing phase in Sandiford's life. She was sentenced to death for smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine into Indonesia.

Uncertainty Over Her Status Upon Return

The Foreign Office has declined to clarify whether Sandiford will be freed upon arrival or immediately taken into custody. However, Indonesian Deputy Minister for Immigration and Correctional Coordination, I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram, stated:

“In England, she will remain in prison.”

Sandiford left Kerobokan jail shortly after 2 pm GMT.
