Following the release of her new album Lux, Spanish pop star Rosalía shared her experience of meeting her musical hero, Patti Smith. Rosalía described the encounter as “beautiful.”
The meeting took place at the famous Electric Lady Studios in New York, facilitated by Lee Foster, the studio's director. Rosalía told BBC 6 Music host Nick Grimshaw:
“So we met because he wanted us to meet.”
Recalling the moment, Rosalía said:
“I remember walking down the stairs. I was wearing this white dress. I was running a little, thinking, ‘Oh my God, I don’t want to make Patti Smith wait!’”
Upon arrival, Rosalía was struck by Patti Smith’s radiant presence:
“She had so much light in her face, in her eyes, in her smile and I couldn’t believe it. She noticed my dress and said, ‘I love your dress.’ Then she talked to me about the song and we started sharing. It was one of the most beautiful things ever to meet her, because I really admire her.”
Rosalía’s album Lux includes a unique element: a 1976 interview clip of Patti Smith in the song “La Yagular.” In it, Smith says:
“Break on through to the other side. Going through one door isn’t enough, a million doors aren’t enough.”
Rosalía’s encounter with Patti Smith was a deeply meaningful moment, highlighting mutual admiration and the powerful bond between artists across generations.
