Masters and British Open champion Shaun Murphy narrowly avoided a stunning upset during the second round of the International Championship in Nanjing, China. The former world champion defeated 14-year-old qualifier Wang Xinzhong in a tense final-frame decider.
The young Chinese player made headlines after defeating women’s world champion Bai Yulu and experienced professional Robbie Williams to claim his spot in the main draw.
Murphy started strong, taking the first three frames with confidence. Yet Wang fought back impressively, claiming five of the next six frames to lead 5–4, putting himself within reach of a remarkable victory.
In the decisive moments, Murphy produced breaks of 72 and 89 to seal his win 6–5 and secure his place in the last 32, where he will play against Elliot Selssor.
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” Murphy told World Snooker Tour. “Ronnie [O’Sullivan] was good at 14, as were many others.”
Murphy expressed his admiration for Wang’s skill and predicted a bright future for the teenage player.
