Battery storage has secured nearly all the new-build capacity in Belgium’s recent capacity market auctions, reinforcing its vital role in the country’s power supply strategy through 2030.

Dominance of Battery Storage in Capacity Auctions

In Belgium’s capacity market auctions, battery storage remains the primary technology contracted for new capacity. Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) payments are crucial in supporting these projects by guaranteeing revenues, which in turn facilitate bank financing.

Elia’s Auction Results

On the last day of October, the system operator Elia released the results of three simultaneous CRM auctions held this year for delivery years Y-4, Y-2, and Y-1. Each auction focused on different time horizons but together they ensure supply security for the 2026-27 delivery year and make significant progress for future years.

Elia stated that “all auctions ran smoothly and on schedule, meaning that security of supply for the 2026-27 delivery year is fully guaranteed.”
