Rajesh Banik, a prominent cricketer from Tripura and former state captain, passed away in a road accident in Anandanagar, western Tripura, a Tripura Cricket Association official confirmed on Saturday. He was 40 years old and is survived by his father, mother, and brother, according to PTI.
Banik made his Ranji Trophy debut in the 2001-02 season and was one of Tripura's leading cricketers during his career. He played as a right-handed batter and occasional leg-spinner, appearing in 42 first-class matches—all for Tripura—scoring 1,469 runs at an average of 19.32. Additionally, he scored 378 runs in 24 List A matches and 203 runs in 18 T20 games between the 2001-02 and 2017-18 seasons.
Born on December 12, 1984, Banik represented India Under-15s in 2000. He played alongside notable cricketers such as Irfan Pathan and Ambati Rayudu in the Asian Cricket Council Under-15 tournament held in Kuala Lumpur that year. He also toured England with the India Under-15 team, where Rayudu and Pathan were teammates.
Beyond his playing career, Banik contributed as a selector for Tripura’s Under-16 team, helping shape the next generation of cricketers.
