Several media sources report that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is nearing a deal with Canada Post that could impose significant cuts to jobs and working conditions.
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government sees the restructuring of Canada Post as a trial for broader attacks on workers nationwide. The government supports plans to reduce the current workforce of 55,000 by two-thirds.
In response, CUPW issued a statement at the start of bargaining on November 3, expressing appreciation for a government-appointed mediator's assistance and indicating the union's willingness to resolve disputes and secure collective agreements.
"To ensure that any decisions... are made... with Union input," CUPW appealed to the pro-business Liberal government.
Daniel Berkley, a postal worker and leading member of the Postal Workers Rank-and-File Committee (PWRFC), remains critical of the negotiations. Workers can reach out to PWRFC via email at [email protected] or through the contact form linked to the original report.
The looming agreement between CUPW and Canada Post risks severe impacts on postal workers, amid a government-backed drive to drastically downsize the workforce and restructure operations.
This negotiation reflects a critical moment where Canada Post’s future and worker rights face profound challenges under government-supported reforms.
