At a November 5 screening of her new film Eternity in Los Angeles, actress and producer Elizabeth Olsen shared how journaling has become an essential part of her daily routine. The 36-year-old star told PEOPLE that she has been writing by hand every morning for the past three years to stay centered and focused.
“You slow down your thoughts, I think, when you start writing by hand,”
Olsen explained that journaling helps her slow down and reflect on her thoughts, providing a sense of calm and clarity. She described her ritual as flexible, saying that sometimes she writes about the previous day or about something she is currently reading.
“Sometimes it's just what happened yesterday. Sometimes it's about what I'm reading. It’s kind of everything.”
The actress emphasized that maintaining this practice has been especially valuable in both her personal life and creative work. Olsen noted that journaling often leads her to new insights that support her acting process.
“It’s really helpful for work. I have three different journals. I have a work journal that’s separate for creating a character.”
Olsen attended the Eternity premiere with her husband, musician Robbie Arnett. Her commitment to mindful self-care appears to influence both her artistic endeavors and overall well-being.
Elizabeth Olsen credits her three-year habit of morning journaling with helping her stay grounded, focused, and creatively inspired in life and work.
