The Lakers reserve big man Maxi Kleber finally returned to action in Saturday’s 122-102 loss to the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena after missing the first nine games due to an abdominal muscle strain.
Kleber, who joined the Lakers through the Luka Doncic trade and played just one game last season, was initially listed as questionable but was declared available 2½ hours before tipoff.
“I’m gonna be ready,” Kleber said after Saturday morning’s shootaround. “Just be prepared and be back out with the guys, get back in rhythm and routine.”
The injury occurred during a preseason practice when Kleber drove to the basket. He described the setback as “very unfortunate, unlucky,” but emphasized his efforts to maintain conditioning and return quickly.
Kleber entered the game in the third quarter at the 5:59 mark when Coach JJ Redick rested the main rotation players, as the Lakers trailed 90-65. In 14 minutes of play, Kleber contributed modestly:
At 33 years old, Kleber was also sidelined for much of the preseason due to a minor quadriceps injury sustained during the Lakers’ first training camp practice in September.
“Very unfortunate, unlucky,”
he summed up the timing of his injuries.
Author’s summary: Maxi Kleber’s return marks a key step as the Lakers address injury challenges, with the big man showing promise despite limited minutes in a tough loss to the Hawks.
