The Perth Scorchers struggled in their home opener against rivals Sydney Sixers, suffering a crushing 10-wicket loss. Despite a night celebrating the wild west, the Scorchers fell short as Sixers captain Ash Gardner starred with a five-wicket haul.
Gardner’s off-spin bowling troubled the home team in front of 3,589 fans at the WACA, taking three consecutive wickets, including key imports Sophie Devine and Paige Schofield. Mikayla Hinkley was the lone standout, scoring 31 runs off 30 balls, but the Scorchers were dismissed for just 109.
With three of the top six players new to the side, Perth clearly lacked cohesion. However, Hinkley expressed confidence in the team’s imports Schofield and Freya Kemp, expecting them to improve during their upcoming four-game road trip.
“We’re a class line-up, the (new) girls have played a lot of cricket and I think they will be disappointed tonight, but once they find their feet in the competition, they’re going to do really, really well,” said Hinkley.
“Freya Kemp, she’s only 20 years old, and she can hit a ball, the same with Paige, and we saw a bit of it in the spring challenge. They’re class players, so they’re not going to take long to find their feet, and once we get to the east coast, I think we’re going to take this competition by storm.”
Summary: The Perth Scorchers faced a tough start this season but remain hopeful that their talented new players will quickly adapt and boost the team's performance on the road.
