Riot Games has revealed that its new trading card game, Riftbound, already has around twenty planned set releases. Despite this ambitious roadmap, many details remain fluid as the team continues refining its approach to building a League of Legends card experience.
Game Director Dave Guskin shared insights into Riot’s long-term strategy for Riftbound. He explained that the team recently mapped out an initial vision for the next several years of development.
“I think we got up to, like, 2030,” Guskin says. “So about 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 sets.”
Guskin clarified that these sets vary widely in their progress. Some are mere outlines, while others are under early design review.
“Those are like the very sketches of ideas of sets. The further out in the future it is, the less confident I am that it's actually going to be that,” he explains.
As Riftbound begins with its debut set, Origins, Riot is still experimenting with what defines its identity compared to other trading card games.
“We're a totally new game, and I don't know that I can say that what's worked for other TCGs will work for us,” the director says.
Riot Games is planning up to twenty future Riftbound sets, though most remain conceptual as the studio refines what makes its League of Legends TCG distinctive.
