Stanford Children’s Hospital to Modernize After $25 Million Donation

Carol and Ned Spieker’s $25 million contribution to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital will enable major modernization of the West Building, enhancing care for mothers and newborns. The project will update the Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services, expanding comfort and privacy for patients and families, according to the hospital’s announcement.

“[Carol and Ned Spieker’s] generosity helps turn our vision for a completely reimagined space into reality — to serve and support more families from our community and beyond,” wrote Luanne Smedley, executive director of the Johnson Center, in an email to The Daily.

The Spiekers, both Class of 2016 Distinguished Careers Institute fellows at Stanford, have a long-standing connection with the hospital. They shared with the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health that their children and grandchildren were born there.

“We care deeply about helping growing families in our community get the best possible care,” said the Spiekers. “We feel fortunate that they are healthy and thriving, and we want to help ensure that future generations of moms and babies receive the support they need.”

Each year, the hospital welcomes about 4,500 newborns—nearly a dozen daily—with approximately 70% of cases classified as high-risk, Smedley noted.
