Whisker Labs launches free tool to track power outages nationwide

Whisker Labs Launches Free Nationwide Power Outage Tracking Tool

Germantown, Maryland-based startup Whisker Labs has introduced a free tool to provide real-time alerts about power outages and electrical fire risks, sometimes even before utilities are aware of them.

The company uses a network of smart home sensors across the U.S. to track and report incidents. Anyone can access the information via the Ting app, which offers an interactive national outage map—no device needed to see nearby outages.

“This data is one of a kind,” said CEO Bob Marshall. “Utilities don’t even know, for the most part, until people call them that the power is out in a neighborhood.”

Marshall emphasizes that sharing this data is critical for public safety as electrical grids face increasing strain. According to a 2024 Climate Central report, power disruptions in the U.S. have doubled in the past decade compared to the previous one.

The app’s outage map helps users determine if their area is affected and monitors when power is restored. This information is especially valuable for residents with medical equipment or pets, helping them decide when it’s safe to return home after severe weather events.

“If you’ve got medical equipment or you’ve got pets, you need to know when the power is out,” Marshall said.

The outage tracking relies on data from Whisker Labs' extensive sensor network deployed nationwide.

Author’s summary: Whisker Labs’ innovative free app delivers timely power outage alerts using smart sensors, enhancing public safety by helping residents and utilities respond faster to electrical risks.
