Two improved programs, Akron and Kent State, will battle for the historic Wagon Wheel trophy on Tuesday night in a spirited MAC contest. The rivalry, one of Northeast Ohio’s longest-running traditions, dates back to 1923 and continues to capture regional attention each season.
“So, rock me mama like a wagon wheel. Rock me mama any way you feel. Rock me mama like the wind and the rain. Rock me mama like a southbound train. mama rock me.”
— Darius Rucker, 2013 hit “Wagon Wheel”
The trophy itself was first created for the 1946 matchup, shortly after World War II, and symbolizes decades of competition and pride. Through 67 total games, Akron holds a nine-game advantage in the all-time series.
This season, both teams enter the showdown with renewed energy. Akron stands at 4–6 and looks to secure its first five-win campaign since 2017, while Kent State comes in at 3–6 — already surpassing its combined win total from the previous two years. The outcome will determine which side ends the season celebrating with the Wagon Wheel and which one settles for a losing record.
Kent State’s recent improvement is noticeable. At 3–6 overall and 2–3 in MAC play, the Golden Flashes have been competitive in nearly every outing, holding late leads in two of their three conference defeats. Their performance marks a turning point for a program once struggling to stay afloat.
The 2025 Wagon Wheel clash renews a century-old rivalry between rebounding programs, with both Kent State and Akron chasing redemption and regional bragging rights.
