SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women’s basketball showcased its trademark defense in a commanding 59–31 victory over NAIA Chapman University on Monday night at Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs held Chapman to just 19 percent shooting from the field, forcing 22 turnovers throughout the game.
Cal Poly’s defense set the tone early, allowing Chapman only eight first-quarter points and building a 31–15 lead by halftime. The Mustangs continued to control the game on both ends, limiting second-chance opportunities and outscoring their opponent 28–16 in the paint.
Six different Mustang players contributed five or more points, emphasizing the team’s balanced offense. Offensive rebounds and transition plays kept pressure on the visiting Panthers, who struggled to find rhythm against Cal Poly’s full-court pressure.
Senior guard Sydney Burns led the Mustangs with 11 points and three steals, while sophomore forward Ava Jones added nine points and seven rebounds. Cal Poly shot 41 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the free-throw line, maintaining consistent control throughout the matchup.
Head coach Shanele Stires praised her team’s effort, stating:
“Our defense continues to fuel our offense. I’m proud of how the team stayed locked in and shared the ball for the full 40 minutes.”
The victory lifts Cal Poly to 3–2 on the season. The Mustangs will next travel north to face Saint Mary’s College this weekend before returning home for Big West Conference play.
