Two Soldiers Killed in Explosion in Cameroon’s Northwest Conflict Zone

Attack in Cameroon’s Northwest

YAOUNDE, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) — Two Cameroonian soldiers lost their lives on Sunday following an explosion in the country’s conflict-ridden English-speaking Northwest Region.

According to local authorities, the blast occurred when an improvised explosive device detonated as a military patrol convoy passed through the area. The attack took place near Bamenda, the regional capital, which has witnessed repeated assaults by armed separatist groups in recent years.

A local security source said the soldiers were conducting a routine patrol aimed at ensuring security in villages affected by separatist activity. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the explosion.

The Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon have been in turmoil since 2017, as separatist fighters seek to form an independent state. The conflict has caused thousands of deaths and displaced many civilians.

“This attack underscores the persistent insecurity in the region despite intensified military operations,” said a regional observer.

Background
