Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary has arrived in The Gambia after fleeing his home country due to fears for his personal safety. Bakary, who contested the results of the recent presidential election, claimed that his life was at risk following rising tensions surrounding the disputed vote.
The opposition figure has publicly criticized alleged irregularities in the election process, saying the authorities failed to ensure transparency and fairness. Reports suggest that after receiving threats and observing an increased presence of security forces near his residence, Bakary decided to leave Cameroon.
Cameroon’s government has not commented directly on Bakary’s departure, though officials have dismissed opposition claims of electoral misconduct. Human rights groups and political observers have voiced concern over the safety of opposition members and activists in the current climate.
Bakary expressed hope for international mediation to help restore democratic trust in Cameroon, saying:
“I did not flee because I wanted to, but because staying could have meant my life was in danger.”
He added that he intends to continue advocating for democratic reforms while in temporary exile.
