Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning has implemented a moratorium on issuing permits and rezoning requests for vape shops.
The decision aims to provide staff with time to review and revise regulations to improve standards for smoke shops in the area.
Jeff Ruggieri, executive director of Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning, said, "We probably need some sort of criteria since other municipalities around us, and some other co-adjacent communities, have all done what kind of what we're doing. They've put moratoriums on the vape shops themselves."
Ruggieri cited concerns over the number of vape shops in the county, estimated to be between 50 and 70, and the need for specific regulations to prevent Macon-Bibb from becoming a hub for vape shops.
