A Sudbury man, Kyle Nahwegabo, was found with 14 grams of cocaine when arrested on a warrant in a mall. Despite the federal prosecutor's request for a longer sentence, Ontario Court Justice Tanya Farkouh Martin sentenced him to the equivalent of a 41-day jail sentence.
I am not convinced further incarceration is appropriate and would accomplish anything in this case
Before sentencing, Justice Farkouh Martin asked Nahwegabo about his plans, to which he replied: "To continue to try and find work, accessing more (addiction) counselling. I may get work with my father-in-law."
The judge expressed concern over Nahwegabo's history of not following court orders, stating: "For 10-12 years, you weren’t following orders, and now you are found with a substantial amount of cocaine on your person in a public place."
