Alberta is getting new licence plates. The UCP announced a 'tournament-style' online vote to select a new design, replacing the current one from 1984.
The new plate will feature the words 'Strong and Free', adopted as the provincial motto in 1980, in its Latin form — Fortis et liber. This replaces 'Wild Rose Country', which was on plates from 1974 and briefly considered for removal in 2014.
'Strong and Free' will serve as a nod to Canada's national anthem and Alberta's position as a strong and sovereign province within a united Canada.
The phrase is also part of the UCP's slogan and references the party's Strong and Free Club for top supporters.
