The deadly human Ebola virus has been discovered in three of seven dead laboratory monkeys imported from the Philippines to a Virginia research firm.
A shipment of about 100 monkeys was received by Hazelton Research Products in Reston, Va. in October. The virus was first detected in at least one monkey, marking the first time it had been found in a non-human and in the United States.
“We don’t know where they got the virus,” said Charles Dasey, a spokesman at the Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.
Officials are working to determine the extent of the virus's spread through the monkey colony.
