Incident of Caste-Based Discrimination in Tamil Nadu
Police in Tamil Nadu's Pappanadu area have arrested six men for allegedly assaulting a 21-year-old Dalit youth because he owned a high-end motorcycle.
The incident occurred on Monday night when the victim, N. Pachilin of Vellur, was intercepted by T. Gopinath, who allegedly told him that
“people of your caste shouldn’t be riding such costly bikes.”
Pachilin replied that he had purchased the vehicle with his own earnings and had every right to use it. However, later that night, Gopinath allegedly returned with five accomplices and assaulted Pachilin.
The incident has drawn attention to continuing caste-based discrimination in the region.
