‘We can choose to take action’: Filmmaker Anayansi Prado on ‘Uvalde Mom’ and what Colorado can learn from the shooting

Interview with Filmmaker Anayansi Prado on "Uvalde Mom"

The documentary "Uvalde Mom" is screening at the Rocky Mountain Women's Film Festival at Colorado College. The film tells the story of Angeli Rose Gomez, a mother who ran into Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, to rescue her two sons during the 2022 school shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers.

Like most of us, I was very moved by what happened in Uvalde. As I learned more about the community — a Latino, working-class farming town near the border — it really resonated with the kinds of communities I’ve been documenting for over 20 years.

Colorado Matters producer Hayley Sanchez spoke with filmmaker Anayansi Prado about the documentary and its relevance to Colorado, which has experienced its own share of gun violence.
