‘I see ‘em. We’ll fight ‘em’: Patton’s Black Panthers

Patton's Black Panthers

The 761st Tank Battalion's outstanding performance in the war's last months bore witness to Ruben Rivers' exemplary courage.

In an impassioned speech in October 1944, George Patton addressed the U.S. Army's first Black tankers, saying:

"I would never have asked for you if you weren’t good. I have nothing but the best in my army. I don’t care what color you are as long as you go out and kill those Kraut sons of bitches. Everyone has their eyes on you and is expecting great things of you. Most of all your race is looking forward to your success. Don’t let them down and damn you, don’t leave me down!"

Despite his motivational words, Patton harbored prejudices and was initially reluctant to commit the Black Panthers to combat.

Author's summary: Patton's speech motivated Black tankers.
