Lawmakers Consider Statewide Delivery Tax for Chicago Transit
Illinois lawmakers are considering a statewide delivery tax on services like DoorDash and Uber Eats to fund Chicago's mass transit system.
The tax would affect all Illinois residents who shop online, regardless of whether they use the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, or Pace.
Illinois House Speaker Chris Welch says the controversial charge could still be used to help fund Chicago's mass transit system.
Although the initial proposal of a $1.50 tax has been deemed too high, Speaker Welch has not eliminated the possibility of a lower tax rate.
- The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) faces a $230 million shortfall in 2025.
- The shortfall is expected to climb to $790 million in 2027 and nearly $890 million by 2028.
The proposed delivery tax has drawn criticism from some Republicans.
