Government shutdown live updates as impasse hits Day 24 with no deal in sight

Government Shutdown Updates

The government shutdown has reached Day 24 with no deal in sight as the Senate stands adjourned for the weekend.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries addressed the potential loss of food aid under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) on November 1 if the shutdown continues.

"The challenge that we confront right now is that Donald Trump and Republicans on Capitol Hill are trying to weaponize hunger in order to jam their extreme right-wing policies in their spending bill down the throats of the American people,"

Jeffries noted that SNAP has an "emergency contingency fund" of about $5 billion that could be used to continue paying benefits, emphasizing that "not a single American should go hungry" on November 1.
