Opinion: Get Waymos off our streets

After a successful 5 years of operation in Arizona, self-driving Waymos have returned to New York, where they collected weather data in 2021. Despite the initial excitement, New York State and Governor Kathy Hochul must reject the deployment of Waymo's autonomous cars.

Threats to Jobs and Culture

The introduction of Waymo's autonomous cars poses a significant threat to the livelihoods of New York City's approximately 130,000 taxi and for-hire drivers, who face almost certain career loss if these robotaxis are allowed to operate in the city.

Back in 2015, when Uber and Lyft expanded to New York, the new rideshare app outnumbered cabs 5.2 to 1.

The city's unpredictable pedestrian and street life ecosystem is also ill-suited for autonomous cars, making their deployment a potential safety risk.

Author's summary: Reject Waymo's autonomous cars to protect NYC jobs and culture.
