A New Mexico State University astronomer and her team have developed a method to predict space weather, specifically solar flares, with a notice period of within a year.
Currently, predictions either provide a few hours to a few days' notice or about 11 years' notice. The new AI/ML method, developed by Juie Shetye and Mausumi Dikpati, fills the gap between these two extremes.
Their research paper, titled "Analysis of Short-term Solar Activity Variability and Estimating Timings of Next Enhanced Bursts," was published in the October 14 edition of The Astrophysical Journal.
