Timothy Martin, a climate activist and architect from North Carolina, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in a 2023 protest at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
Martin was found guilty of conspiracy and injuring government property after he and another protester, Joanna Smith, splashed paint on the display case and base of Edgar Degas's sculpture La petite danseuse de quatorze ans (Little Dancer Aged Fourteen, 1880).
Declare Emergency, the group affiliated with the protesters, stated their actions were a form of protest against the government's inaction on climate change.
