Mosquitoes have infiltrated Iceland, a country previously thought to be too harsh for them to survive, potentially due to climate change.
A local resident, Björn Hjaltason, captured two female and one male Culiseta annulata mosquito in mid-October, marking the first confirmed sighting in Iceland.
The Nordic island, previously one of the last places on Earth without mosquitoes, is now home to at least a few of these insects.
The Culiseta annulata mosquitoes do not transmit human pathogens, making them more of a pest than a peril.
With winter approaching, it is uncertain whether these mosquitoes will survive until spring, leaving only Antarctica as the last mosquito-free continent.
