Carrie Bickmore, a well-known broadcaster and dedicated cancer fundraiser, has been honored as the 2026 Australian of the Year for Victoria. The award was presented during a ceremony in Melbourne on November 6, celebrating her lasting impact on brain cancer awareness and research.
Bickmore’s commitment to combating brain cancer stems from deep personal experience and tireless advocacy. Since 2015, her initiatives have generated more than $27 million to advance scientific studies and support families affected by the disease.
In 2021, her efforts led to the founding of The Brain Cancer Centre, a pioneering institution uniting leading researchers across Australia. The center has fueled numerous studies and launched innovative clinical trials that have brought meaningful progress in treatment approaches.
"Brain cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Australians under 40."
Bickmore’s personal connection to this cause is profound—she lost her husband, Greg, to brain cancer in 2010, an event that inspired her lifelong mission to accelerate research and improve survival outcomes.
Alongside Bickmore’s achievements, this year’s honors also celebrate other outstanding individuals. Bryan Lipmann AM, an advocate for elderly people experiencing homelessness, was named the 2026 Senior Australian of the Year for Victoria.
Carrie Bickmore’s recognition as Victoria’s 2026 Australian of the Year highlights her relentless drive to fight brain cancer through research, advocacy, and heartfelt dedication.
