Three tomato sauces urgently recalled over fears they may cause 'fatal' botulism

Urgent Recall of Tomato Sauces Due to Botulism Risk

First and Last Bakery, LLC, based in Connecticut, has issued a recall for three popular tomato-based pasta sauces. Customers are strongly advised to return these products for a full refund.

Products Affected

These sauces were distributed primarily between Connecticut and Massachusetts, including through Big Y stores, starting from September 22, 2025. All have a use-by date of September 26, 2025.

Health Risks

Clostridium botulinum bacteria produce toxins that affect the nervous system and can lead to paralysis.

Though no illnesses have been reported, the risk of botulism—a potentially fatal food poisoning—has prompted the recall. The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) noted that these sauces were produced without a sufficiently evaluated process to prevent the growth of these dangerous bacteria.

Cause of Contamination

Botulism can develop when acidified or low-acid canned foods are not correctly processed, allowing Clostridium botulinum bacteria to form and produce harmful toxins.

Customer Guidance

Author's summary: A recall has been issued on three tomato sauces due to risk of deadly botulism poisoning; customers should return any purchases immediately for safety.
