Classes at Franklin & Marshall College were cancelled on Monday after a transformer failure cut power to much of the campus over the weekend. A college spokesperson reported that the malfunction occurred Saturday morning on Harrisburg Pike, leading to outages across the campus and nearby neighborhoods.
Throughout the weekend, all residence halls except Roschel College House operated on emergency generators. Residents of Roschel were temporarily relocated and given alternative housing on Saturday and Sunday nights. Both Shadek-Fackenthal and Martin Libraries, along with other campus facilities, remained closed through Sunday.
According to Peter Durantine, the college’s director of media relations, crews originally expected to restore power by Sunday evening, but the process took longer than planned. As a result, classes and campus events for Monday were cancelled.
“We apologize for the continued disruption and the inconvenience this has caused,” Durantine said in a Sunday evening statement. “Our teams are working around the clock with PPL Electric to complete repairs and resume normal operations as soon as possible.”
Durantine confirmed that restoration efforts would need to continue into Monday. Faculty and staff were advised to stay off campus and work remotely where feasible.
