Cardinal Mauro Gambetti presided over a penitential rite of reparation at the main altar of St. Peter's Basilica on October 13.
This followed a serious act of desecration that had taken place earlier. The rite included a penitential procession, sprinkling of holy water, and incensing of the altar to purify it.
Asking God for "forgiveness" for the desecration was emphasized during the rite, according to Father Enzo Fortunato, director of communications for St. Peter's Basilica.
The event was attended by members of the chapter of the Vatican basilica.
