Skywatchers in Australia have a special opportunity tonight to see the Aurora Australis, or southern lights, which may be visible to the naked eye. The Australian Space Weather Forecasting Center has issued a geomagnetic storm alert predicting vibrant green and pink lights illuminating the night sky.
The most spectacular views will be available in Tasmania. Residents of New South Wales (NSW) might also catch the lights if they find a dark location and watch at the right time.
For tonight’s display, it is recommended to move away from city lights and look south starting around 10 p.m.
The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center noted that aurora lights might also be visible to residents in U.S. states near the Canadian border.
Aurora Australis remains a rare natural spectacle, and conditions must align for this breathtaking light show to appear.
Author's summary: The Aurora Australis is expected tonight with the best views in Tasmania; clear, dark skies after 10 p.m. offer the best chance to see this stunning natural light display.
