The Clean Arctic Alliance has praised the Nordic Council for adopting a resolution that mandates the use of cleaner marine fuels in the Arctic region. This resolution urges Nordic governments to develop and enforce regulations aimed at reducing black carbon emissions from ships operating in the Arctic.
On October 30, during a session in Stockholm, the Nordic Council passed the resolution calling on the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations’ shipping authority, to establish rules for sustainable polar fuels. The resolution highlights the political commitment of Nordic countries to collaborate in promoting stricter environmental measures in Arctic waters.
According to the WWF Arctic Program, the resolution reflects the desire for “the IMO to implement guidelines that necessitate increased use of polar fuels for ships sailing in the Arctic waters of the Nordic countries.”
The WWF Arctic Program emphasized that if the IMO adopts such a regulation, it would address a long-standing issue in international marine governance by significantly reducing black carbon emissions from shipping activities in the fragile Arctic ecosystem.
The proposed regulation could “finally tackle one of the most long-standing issues in the international marine governance—the need to reduce black carbon emissions from shipping.”
Author's summary: The Nordic Council’s resolution, backed by the Clean Arctic Alliance, pushes for IMO regulations to mandate cleaner marine fuels in the Arctic, aiming to lower harmful black carbon emissions and protect the region’s environment.
